This night, the Milky Way was revealed only long enough to capture two photographs before storm clouds rolled in, obscuring the stars.

LOCATION

Dark Skies

In the past, people were able to see the Milky Way fairly easily, because if it was night, the skies were dark. Nowadays, you’ll have to travel to the outskirts of cities and beyond to escape the modern phenomenon known as light pollution.

When it comes to location, choose a place with dark skies, somewhere preferably far away from cities, or as far away from major light pollution as possible. There are tons of online resources that can give you suggestions on locations near you, but don’t think you’re limited to International Dark Sky Parks. Even just the outskirts of cities can be dark enough to view the Milky Way. Get creative - sometimes the stars are closer than you think.
